Purple Earrings

When I was at school there was a girl there in the class above called Helen. When we used to see her away from school all my frinds and myself thought her a bit strange as she always wore purple earrings. I love a challenge so I tried some myself but they didn’t suit me at all.

Last time that I was out shopping for earrings I started thinking about the general history of them.

I found some interesting things on Wikipedia that I will be able to share with the girl behind the counter next time. The idea of piercing of the ears and adding some form of ring as a form of body adornment has been around for almost as long as civilisation itself. It was originally the men who wore them and was particularly popular with soldiers and often signified some personal achievement in battle. Among the earliest that can still be found are on images of the ancient Persian soldiers on the walls of the palace at Persopolis. They are also mentioned in the bible when Moses is up the mountain and Aaron asks the rebelling Israelites to give him their earrings so that he can make a statue of a god for them. The first thing that has to be decided the first time that you want to buy a pair of earrings is whether you want to have your ears pierced or not. If you decide that you do not, you can always get them done at a later date but if you get them pierced, they will be like that for the rest of your life.

The three most popular types of pierced earrings are: -

  1. stud earrings – these are normally quite small in size and are held in place by a bar through your ear with a catch on the back.
  2. hoop earrings – perhaps these are what gave the earring its name originally as they like just like a ring. They can be either circular or semi-circular in shape and they are attached by one end sliding into a small tube at the other end. They can be as large or small as you want.
  3. dangle earrings – these are the ones that dangle down from the ear lobe and can be quite short or reach right down to the shoulders.

Purple Chandelier Earrings

Of course, you are not limited to just having one type and nowadays people often wear several at the same time.

I often wonder these day what has happened to Helen and whwther she still keeps wearing those purple earrings. She has probably changed totally by know.
